Raelean Hall
Australian artist Raelean Hall has been a resident on the Sunshine Coast, Qld since 1976. Raelean is a versatile artist who is self-taught and is recognised for her traditional painting style in watercolour and oil mediums, painting familiar subjects including landscapes, portraits, seascapes, figures and still life. She has a great affiliation with beach life depicting her subjects with confidence and clarity. Raelean has travelled to Japan numerous times to study the art of ‘Sumi-e’ with master teachers (Mrs) Shoka Ota, (Mr) Chiaki Kato and Sei Amori. Training in this black ink medium on rice paper has provided great awareness in the eastern philosophy of watercolour painting. She has attended many paint workshops with renowned Australian artists and life drawing/painting at the ‘Julian Ashton Art School’ in Sydney.
Raelean has also completed a university degree (Bachelor of Science - Psychology), with emphasis on Perception, Memory and Cognition. She is currently completing a Masters in Art Therapy, which has opened her world to more abstract concepts of painting, thinking and feeling, however her traditional methods of painting are deeply engrained and her teachings are traditional by nature.
Raelean has taught watercolour painting (including Sumi-e technique) to various painting associations including, The Watercolour Society of Queensland, and the Noosa Watercolour Society. She is well known for her endearing manner of teaching with a high level of energy producing many demonstrations to inspire her students. She incorporates her new-found knowledge and technique of Sumi-e painting (mind before brush), which is a thousand year old tradition of watercolour (ink) painting. She also enlightens the students about the psychology of art in regards to creativity and perception.
In the year 2000, Raelean received an arts grant to hold her first exhibition at the Seaview Artist Gallery, Moffat Beach. This grant was provided by the Regional Arts Development Fund (in association with the Queensland State Government and Caloundra City Council). She was invited to show a progressive collection of Sumi-e paintings (from 1996 to 2003) at the ‘Caloundra Regional Art Gallery’ in July – August 2003 for a period of six weeks which proved highly successful.
Raelean has received numerous highly commended awards, winning the Portrait Award at the Caloundra Arts and Crafts Festival in 2003, and “Best Regional Artist of Southeast Qld’ at the Noosa Arts Festival in 2004.
Her works have been sold to collectors from as far as Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, New Zealand.
