The Manly Gallery - Denise Murray
About Denise Murray
My paintings are primarily landscapes. What fascinates me is the way a landscape can move and shift as we view it according to changing atmospheric conditions. Shadows and forms move in and out of view as we watch. This can be a product of physical conditions or our state of mind as we view it. As my paintings are a representation of that concept, the affect of their changing and shifting shapes, colours and forms are also affected by our state of mind in the same way. Surface texture and the complexity of the painted surface are very important to me as well. When viewing a painting, I like to allow the experience to happen without labels.
From this comes the "art of discovery" in which I allow the painting to show me what comes next. I will isolate and strengthen areas which excite me. Colour is very important and texture will suggest a world of possibilities. The sheer impossibility of repeating a work which pleases me makes it precious.
